Dependence Day

Well well, another July 4th.

The day, allegedly, the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Which is a lie, by the way: July 4th 1776 is the day it was published, not signed — that happened 2 days earlier.

Of course in today’s world we think of the two things as more-or-less identical, because they are. In those days they were not; such manuscripts were hand-written and then signed in wet ink where today we write emails, “news” articles and blog posts with keyboards with many people unable to write in cursive at all. Indeed that is a somewhat-perishable skill — my longhand (cursive) writing is still functional, but I’ve used it so little over the last 40 years that it is nowhere near its quite-readable former self.
