I no longer pay for parking. This is my decision. I’m not telling you what to do. I’m simply done paying fees that, in my view, are not lawfully imposed.
This morning, I had breakfast in Palm Beach—one of the named defendants in my federal lawsuit against the Parking Industrial Complex. I parked in front of the legendary Brazilian Court Hotel, I stayed nearly two hours, and walked back fully expecting a ticket.
Nothing. No citation. No envelope. No digital ambush. Just silence.
A few nights earlier, I was in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. I parked on the street and was greeted by what looked like a payment instruction, not a lawful regulatory sign. It told me to download an app. That was it.
No days of enforcement. No hours. No clear statement that parking even costs money.
They assumed I would make the connection. I’m done making connections.
Going forward, I will only pay for parking when there is a legally compliant R7 sign—properly installed, clearly visible, and authorized under Florida law and MUTCD standards. Not a sticker. Not a QR code. Not a cluster of conflicting signs.
A real sign.
In Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, I did receive a ticket. The print was barely legible. The demand was $30. The “appeal” directed me to a private adjudication portal. Not a court. Not a judge. Just a portal.
So I responded accordingly. I sent a Priority Express Mail package containing my 80-page federal complaint and an invitation for them to join the lawsuit. Now we wait.
This isn’t about $30. It’s about due process, lawful notice, and the outsourcing of government power to private, for-profit systems that assume compliance instead of earning it. If the system wants compliance, it should start by complying with the law.
