To Governor Bill Lee: Want to Solve the Problem?

As I’ve commented on before there are two basic sorts of non-defensive firearm violence, when you get down to it. The problem is that defensive firearm violence is not only appropriate its a good thing. Thus the remainder of this column discusses only the aggressive use of firearms and not defensive or sporting uses.

There are those that are components of, or the intent of, criminal activity. The bank robber who shoots a teller, the carjacker who shoots the victim, a mugger who shoots the resisting party or a rapist who shoots the woman either to shut her up or because she manages to apply a knee to his nuts.

Gang-bangers having a war over a street corner fall into this category, as do gang-related drive-by shootings.

They can only be addressed by locking up the criminals for their crimes, making sure that when someone commits an earlier, lesser offense they pay for it — and thus have drilled into their head that they won’t get away with it. The bank robber or corner gang-banger thinks he will get away with it and that is why he does it.
